Fall Touches: Burlap Mini Bags

Here’s a little tutorial for the mini burlap bags I used on my fall door decor this year. You will need burlap and wire. I just bought cheap burlap and florist wire from Hobby Lobby.

I was happy to find small live mums on clearance for $1 each at Lowe’s. Some were worse for wear but quite a few were healthy with new buds. I picked the healthiest of the bunch.

Cut squares from the burlap to size. To figure out the size of squares roughly measure the corner of the burlap to the top of the plant. I cut one square from that and then used that square as a pattern to cut the others.

Fray about three or four rows of strings to give it a little more charm.

Place the pot in the center of the square and start sewing the wire in and out of the burlap around the pot.

I found for my bags the best placement of wire stitches for my project was two on the long sides and one in each corner.

When you get about halfway around you will need to gather the burlap on the wire as you work.

I found it best to finish off the wire on the long side. Thread the wire to the outside of the back.

Insert the pot in the middle, cinch the burlap as tightly as you can without damaging the plant and then twist the wire several times. Fluff the burlap and wire to your garland.

Note: I took my plants out of the pots for the garland. They were easier to work with in the garland. I can also just take those, snip the wire and plant into the ground or a slightly larger pot to not waste the plant or the burlap.

These are also great to used as sit-abouts. I even gave this one as a gift!

This is also a cute way to dress down a candle with a little texture and charm. I tied a fun ribbon around the wire on this one. This project is scalable to any size as well. I could see a few of these scattered down the Thanksgiving table.

I hope you enjoyed my little tutorial. I know – easy peasy! What have you crafted lately?

Really cute idea. I love using burlap on projects–cheap, earthy & textural. I just made a tied burlap wreath. It was super easy but super messy! I love how it turned out & it works well with my fall decor & will look great with my Christmas decor as well.

I’m really enjoying your blog. I grew up in Louisiana & now live in the Arizona desert. It’s a very different “Southern”!

The continued absence of economic justice, usually stripped away by predatory capitalism, will keep inflating the countrys prison inmate population to the further endangerment of society. Other fish that had gotten sick with columnaris acted markedly worse until we gave it treatment. For her, the eighteen karat yellow gold ring, set with a diamond-filled frame of a star, makes a cute and dazzling anniversary or Valentines Day gift. Ok this one is more of a tip than a method, but it’s useful anyway.
