Saturdays with Southern Living at HOME – Ultimate Cookbook

Welcome to this week’s edition of Saturdays with Southern Living at HOME! Growing up, Southern Living recipes were prized at any social gathering or potluck. If it wasn’t the cooks original then this was the next best thing! You really can’t go wrong with a Southern Living recipe! This week let’s look at one of my all-time favorite Southern Living cookbooks..
The All-New Ultimate Southern Living Cookbook is an absolute must for any kitchen. This is a great reference cookbook with everything from basics to gourmet. Enjoy more than 1,250 updated recipes and 500 photos, PLUS a food terms dictionary and nutritional analysis of all recipes! This is the first book I grab when I want to try something new and I have several pages bookmarked with recipes I go to on special occasions. A few of these include Standing Rib Roast, Basic Yeast Bread Dough, and Banana Nut Bread.
Here’s my favorite recipe for chocolate frosting. I usually bake a Duncan Hines cake and then frost with this. It’s fabulous and is met with RAVE reviews!!!

Perfect Chocolate Frosting
1 cup semisweet chocolate morsels
1/2 cup half-and-half
3/4 cup butter
2 1/2 cups sifted powders sugar

Combine first 3 ingredients in a medium saucepan; cook over medium heat, stirring until chocolate melts. Remove from heat; add powdered sugar mixing well.
Place saucepan in a large bowl of ice. Beat at low speed with an electric mixer until frosting holds its shape and loses its gloss. Add a few more drops of half-and-half if needed for desired spreading consistency.

Yield 2 1/2 cups

I highly recommend this cookbook as a gift for any student heading to college, a college grad heading off to start their career, or a new bride. Personalize the gift by writing a message on the front inside cover and it will be a gift that is cherished for years to come.
Pick up one for yourself as well along with the Ornate Iron Art Bookstand to display the cookbook in both open and closed positions. You can find both items in our Spring 2009 Catalog on page 59. For more information on placing your order, please contact me a j.fryar (at) comcast.net.
Did you grow up on Southern Living recipes, too? What’s your favorite Southern Living recipe?

My mom baked bread out of a SL magazine that was so crispy and flour covered I don’t know how she read it! She also made “Hummingbird Cake” out of a SL magazine.
