This weekend I had a sudden craving for chocolate gravy and biscuits. It came on quickly. It came on with a vengeance. So I did what any other good southern fried gal would do – I whipped some up.
I don’t make this often. It’s probably been a couple of years. It was met with rave reviews. Let’s just say BBC was doing the happy dance after devouring two helpings. That made my day. My mom only made chocolate gravy a few times each year so it was always a special treat. It’s always fun to recreate happy memories of my childhood with BBC.
Here’s the (roundabout) recipe that I used. As most southern cooks I don’t really follow recipes exactly unless I’m baking. It’s usually a little dab of this and some of that until it looks about right. This is what I did yesterday and it worked beautifully. Enjoy!
Chocolate Gravy
1/4 cup flour
3 tablespoons cocoa
2/3 sugar
pinch of salt
2 cups milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 tablespoon butter
Combine the dry ingredients in a sauce pan. (I stir with a wire whisk to combine. I guess you could accomplish the same by sifting together but that dirties more dishes.) Add the milk and whisk until combined. Heat on medium heat stirring until thickened. Add vanilla and butter and stir until mixed well. Serve immediately over biscuits. Yum!
What special treat did you enjoy as a child? Do you still enjoy it every now and again?

That looks yummy. Of course, you could sell me anything if it has the word chocolate in it! I loved it when my Mother would make pie dough and with the scraps she would slather with butter, cinnamon and sugar and bake. It was great!

Chocolate gravy is one taste many do not understand, you have to experience it to know – a great dish – I had never heard of it until a few years ago and I grew up in the south..

Girl, that looks scrumptios! I am a southern girl through and through and have never had chocolate gravy.
Some of my favorite childhood foods are good old fried foods; fried okra, fried squash, um…corn bread, pinto beans…just good old grub food.

Oh, my goodness! I thought I was hallucinating at first, but it is real! Chocolate gravy! Like something out of Willie Wonka’s Chocolate Factory. It is a dream come true. I will definitely have to make this!!
My favorites growing up were my mom’s lemon bars and my aunt’s oatmeal fudgies. Actually, the fudgies are similar to the chocolate gravy except there is no flour and you mix it with oatmeal instead of pouring on biscuits. Yum!

Saw this on your 2010 recap post and had to comment! This was pure comfort food in our house. Anytime someone had a REALLY bad day (boyfriend break up, failing a major test, etc) my mom would make this for us. It ALWAYS made us feel better. I think I will be making some for my kids this weekend.
