Dishing It…Dads Rule

Time flies when you are having fun! And Amanda’s Dishing It Parties are just that! This month we are dishing about dads!

1. Name your favorite TV or Movie dad.

Favorites are hard for me…but my top three includes Atticus Finch (To Kill a Mockingbird), Dr. Jake Houseman (Dirty Dancing) and Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable (The Cosby Show).

2. What’s something you enjoyed doing with your dad when you were a child.
Summers were the most fun with dad. We kept a full schedule between softball games (he was a co-coach of my team), swimming at Lake Ft. Smith, and playing in the rapids at the creek.

That’s him handing out trophies to the team in the cutoff shorts. That’s me to the left – sexy shorts, long mullet and all.

This isn’t a question but when I have a funny story about this photo. My brother dusted it off and posted on facebook a few months back. We were in Orlando and I think it was in the summer before 11th grade. When I saw the photo all I could think was, “WHY dear God was I wearing horizontal stripes???” And so I posted that. To which my brother replied, “Well what the crap was I wearing?” I hadn’t even noticed before that. He was wearing homemade jams. I guess my mom thought it would be cool to make a top that matched. When my best friend saw it her response was, “And what about your dad’s shorts?” Giggle. After all that I think I was the best dressed one there. We laughed until we cried all our makeup off.

3. If your husband is a father, what does he do that makes him a great dad?

I’m glad that my husband isn’t afraid to show my little boy affection. He engages with BBC on a daily basis. He also stewards him spiritually by making sure BBC gets to church and he reads him a Bible story each night.

He’s also a cool dad that goes on school field trips. I think that is important for a few reasons. First of all I stay home with BBC so it’s good for DH to share the fun and spend that special time with BBC. I also think it is important because DH is more relaxed than I am so BBC gets to enjoy himself more. Finally I think it is important so that BBC can enjoy those moments purely from a male perspective.

4. What do your kids like to do with their dad?
As a Southern Living at HOME consultant I spend a couple of nights each week partying. That leaves BBC at home with DH alone on those nights. BBC likes to watch movies and play video games with daddy because it’s cool. They also like to go to the library together (DH is a reader and I am not).

5. Tell us a funny story about your husband as dad.
One night when I was heading out to a party, I overheard DH tell BBC they could do anything in he wanted for fun that night. BBC enthusiastically replied, “I know, Daddy, let’s fold clothes and vacuum.” That’s my boy! DH had to oblige because he said they could do whatever BBC wanted. Muhahaha…

Well, I guess that’s about all I have to say about the dads in my life for now. Thanks Amanda for hosting another great party!

Wow, how did you convince BBC to suggest folding clothes and vacuuming?! :)

We all have a horizontal-stripes story, I think!

I enjoyed your post. Thanks for the smiles!

Love the jams!! ;) You have clearly taught BBC well if he wants to fold clothes and vacuum. That’s awesome! :) I’m pretty sure all dad wore those shorts in the early 80s. ;)

Thanks so much for linking up!

I think that is so great that DH and BBC get to hang a few nights a week alone, I think it’s so important! I remember my uncle wearing those shorts in the 80′s, my Dad never wore shorts, we actually called him white lightening when we went out on the boat! :)

Oh honey, he is going to make a fabulous husband some day! Good job teaching him the laundry and vacuuming! Too cute! Oh and we all have those horrible pictures with clothes we cannot believe we went out in public with!

Stop on over I am dishing it with Amanda too!

I keep forgetting you are a fellow Arkansan! Your dad sounds great! We practically lived at the lake in the summer, but never Lake Ft. Smith.

I wish my kids would clean my house. LUCKY!
